Serving as an apprentice on the ship Oro Jackson at a tender age, this pirate who later gets highest bounty out of all Four Emperors, is exposed to the world of piracy and all escapades while developing a firm bond with his peer- Buggy the Clown. During his training, when he is mentored by Gol D. Roger, Shank gains wisdom and knowledge about how to be an excellent pirate.

After his captain Roger gets executed, he forms his own crew of Red-Haired Pirates. Moreover, he really comes into his own and secures predominance in the New World. Shanks bumps into Luffy in Foosha Village and hands him his straw hat, personifying the connection that they share. However, he loses his left arm trying to protect Luffy from a Sea King, ends the Paramount War and earns the acclaim and esteem of Whitebeard, Dracule Mihawk and the World Government as well!
