The ‘Cat Burglar’ Nami is perhaps one of the most complex and rich characters in One Piece. Being the second person to join the familiar Straw Hat Pirates, Nami is appointed as its navigator and also acts as its de facto treasurer.She is shown to be driven by an unwavering determination, with her lifelong quest being to chart a map of the whole world.
Her plan was to join the Straw Hats so that she could rob them and buy her village back from Arlong, the sawshark fish man. However, actually joined the Straw Hats after they rebelled against and defeated Arlong. Her character goes through a transformation over the course of the series, with the Arlong Park arc being her story about avenging her mother’s death.
Nami possesses various powers and abilities. Nami uses the polearm as a close combat weapon although knowing her lack of raw strength, she tends to use her impressive cunning and specially designed weapons in combat.
- Cartography: Nami is good at her assigned role of a navigator, really good. She can perform complex advanced equations within minutes to predict a precise course of action. She also has a supernatural ability to sense changes in the weather with her body alone. These skills together give her the ability to accurately predict the weather and also navigate through all types of weather.
- Pickpocketing: Nami is called the ‘Cat Burglar’ by the World Government for a reason. Having spent her childhood trying to collect money to buy back her village, she resorted to thieving and pickpocketing. In the iconic scene at the harbor, she was able to steal numerous wallets from the villagers with no one, including the Straw Hats, noticing it until she revealed it.
- Weather manipulation: Nami mastered Usopp’s invention of the Clima-Tact, being able to manipulate the weather with it, to the extent of dropping lightning bolts at will.
Nami’s past led to her hating all pirates. Her mother Bell-Mere was murdered by the pirate Arlong. Nami also spent years under Arlong’s imprisonment and vividly remembers the abuse she suffered. But this perception of hers changed when she met Luffy, eventually joining the Straw Hats.
She is a dynamic character, driven by the desire to obtain wealth and freedom from her past and using her cleverness and intellect to steer through any difficult situation. One of her signature traits is also her absolute love for money, with her usual interest charge of repaying debt being 300%.
Despite her rough demeanor, Nami has a sensitive side, especially towards her friends. She is highly dedicated to the Straw Hat team and will go to great measures to defend them.
